8:30 – 9:00 a.m. Welcome and Introduction
We will review our goals for the day, explain why stories are such a potent tool for business, and have participants discuss their biggest challenges with writing and making presentations.
9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Keynote and Discussion
A Storytelling Mindset
Participants will learn how to develop a storytelling mindset. We will explore the elements of a story and learn how stories unite ideas with emotion, engrossing audiences and persuading potential customers. We will watch two short videos during the presentation that underscore how stories often are informed by one of two emotions: hope or fear. We will do several brief exercises in this session, which will help participants understand how they can identify — and use — emotional themes in their work.
10:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Break
10:45 a.m. – 12 p.m. Fundamentals of Storytelling
We will look at narrative structure and easy ways to organize materials. We will also discuss the seven keys to good writing, using a series of short exercises to practice them. Some of these exercises will involve the company’s materials, giving participants a chance to explore how their presentations could be revised.
12 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. Lunch
12:30 p.m.- 1:30 p.m. Fundamentals of Visualization

We will look at what kinds of visualizations are most appropriate for certain kinds of presentations and explore ways to use color and font size most effectively. We will examine some award-winning infographics to see how these models could be used to transform company visuals. There will be several short exercises to help teach basic visualization concepts.
1:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. Storytelling Card Game
Participants will break into teams to practice what they’ve learned during the morning. They will play a card game to apply fundamentals of storytelling to their work. The game challenges them to answer a variety of questions to create a narrative, including identifying an overarching story idea, describing their audience, and looking at the audience’s emotional choices.
2:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. Exercise
Turning Company Data into Stories
Participants will identify stories in data most engaging to their audience. Each person will find potential stories and brainstorm ideas with other team members. They will practice narrative techniques, focusing on their current work projects and they will use company data to create charts and infographics.
4:45 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Final Group Discussion
Participants will reconvene in their large group to discuss lessons learned and how to apply their new skills in future work.
